Why do people still see herbalists?

How long have you got? There are all sorts of reasons people go to herbalists. Here are seven.

  1. They have a chronic condition that isn’t shifting or resolving.
  2. They’ve fallen through the cracks of the health system.
  3. No-one has time to listen to them because they’re an elder struggling to communicate their health concerns or a person with English as a second language.
  4. Their bodies aren’t coping well with the side effects of pharmaceutical drugs.
  5. They want something natural and safe to support their kids’ health.
  6. Someone they know had a great result and has referred them.
  7. They’re desperate.

The last resort?

People generally go to herbalists as a last resort. We don’t tend to be the first choice. That’s fine, although it does mean that they’re often pretty unwell by the time they get to us.

There’s a view out there that herbs are somehow quaint and old-fashioned. That they don’t work or that they take too long. And nothing could be further from the truth. If you match the right herb to the right person in the right dose, results can be dramatic.

Our species has millennia of experience with healing plants. They live alongside us. They continue to evolve with us.

They’re perfectly equipped to help us navigate the complex health challenges of the 21st century.
