The legendary liver
Let’s face it—there’s no way to make the liver look attractive. Even AI can’t manage it. Which is sad because the liver is very, very sexy indeed. At least where your good health is concerned.
The herbalist’s favourite organ
The liver is known as the herbalist’s favourite organ. That’s because it’s so important to every aspect of your health. Bad skin? A herbalist will probably treat your liver first (although they may give you something topical too). Digestive issues? Liver. Hormonal imbalances? Liver first. Aches and pains? Liver first.
Why liver first? Because it has more than 1,000 known functions in the body. If you were to represent it in the form of a physical factory, it would cover the area of three city blocks. But if that isn’t enough to get you mildly interested, here are the two things that most blow me away about this vital organ:
- The liver heats your blood. I don’t know why I always thought blood temperature had something to do with the heart (romantic notion, probably) but it’s the heat generated by the factory of your liver that keeps you warm.
- The liver does most of its work while you’re asleep. It can hold a whopping 25% of your body’s blood supply when you’re at rest. This is yet another reason to get a decent night’s sleep. All those liver processes depend on it.
Herbal support for the liver
If you’ve been giving your liver a hammering, you’ll see the whites of your eyes take on a yellowish tinge. Your tongue may have a yellow coating as well.
Herbs to support the liver include Dandelion, Burdock, Golden Seal, Celandine and the amazing St Mary’s Thistle. This last not only helps to protect the liver; it also helps it to regenerate.
So yes, I think the legendary liver’s tremendously sexy. It just doesn’t look it. But what factory ever does?
